The past

SON scheepsverzekeringen. has operated under its present name since 2012, but had already gained prior experience over more than a century. SON scheepsverzekeringen was created from a merger between the companies Schepen Onderlinge Nederland u.a. and TVM verzekeringen. Schepen Onderlinge Nederland was created in 1993 from a merger between the companies 'Compact De Eendracht' (formed in 1857), 'Fortuna' (formed in 1941) and 'Zeevaart en Hoogezand-Maartenshoek'. The latter company was created in 1986 from a merger between 'Maatschapij Zeevaart' (formed in 1945) and 'Onderlinge Verzekeringsmaatschappij voor IJzeren Schepen Hoogezand-Maartenshoek' (formed in 1896).

The roots of our company thus lie in proffesional navigation. In a time when people were trying to make progress together, it was necessary to protect themselves against financial blows they could suffer. Joint iniatives were often developed in this regard, through which a mutual spreadings of risks was achieved. The later 'mutual' insurance companies arose from these local initiatives. When people had more leisure time, and the first wave of pleasurevessels hit the water, the insurance of pleasure vessels was added.
